October 23, 2021: Visual treats – Quilts and Foliage

Greetings dear readers! Today I am filling my post with photos of just a few quilts from the Cocheco Quilters Guild show and some of the lovely foliage we’ve had lately here in southeastern NH. Take time to absorb the beauty of the colors and designs and appreciate the creativity in each realm.

The Best of Show was a lovely rendition of a Wendy Williams pattern in wool applique:

Enjoy some closeups:

Here is my guild’s raffle quilt. The ladies on this committee did a fabulous job with a challenging design and we raised a lot of money for charity!!

Here’s a nice rendition of “Stars in a Time Warp” from the Barbara Brackman sew along a few years ago:

I really liked the use of the kaleidoscope block – playing with color and value allows 2 alternating designs to emerge:

My Spirit of Japan quilt was awarded a blue ribbon:

My ”2020 Cancelled” was given a red ribbon (I’ll comment on the judging in a future post😊):

I have a lot more photos from the show to share, including the ”Red and White” exhibit, but I want to share some foliage so will get back to those quilts in future posts. Autumn color arrived later than usual this year and has been more subdued overall, with less ”red”, but areas and spots of beauty can still be found easily if one is looking.

The bog:

A view of the elk farm fields:

My deck covered with leaves😊!

Lots of raking and sweeping in our future!😐

Embrace beauty and joy wherever and whenever they occur, no matter how brief or seemingly inconsequential.

Be kind, be grateful, and cherish each day, Gladi

The Village Circle is an incredible quilt. Beautifully done–and I love the lighthouses. Thank you for the close-ups. The details are stunning.
    What a gorgeous raffle quilt!
“Galaxy” is a very clever application of the Kaleidoscope block.
Spirit of Japan #6: Enchanted Windows is lovely. I want to see the fabrics up close–and the quilting motifs.
Oh, I love the design and the inspiration behind your “2020 Cancelled” quilt. I can’t imagine why the red, but judging can be very subjective at times.
Wonderful shots of the fall foliage. Looks like your deck is a great place for a restorative moment with nature.

Thank you Janet for all your thoughtful comments! When the Japanese quilt was finished last year, I posted several closeups of the quilting. Check 7/20/20 in my archives for these.

Wow! Great photography of Mother Nature’s finest. Absolutely stunning quilting. Worthy of the win.

Lovely quilts and congratulations on your ribbons.
Judging – I look forward to your thoughts. I have had many over the years……and now I don’t enter some of the shows.
Glorious colors! We are not having a very colorful fall here yet so I appreciate seeing yours~

Thanks so much Barb! One issue was that the judging of the 3 different judges was wildly different! Luckily I’m not involved in quilting for the competition and am perfectly happy designing and making quilts to suit myself. That doesn’t mean, though, that I don’t aim for excellence in my work.

three~! wow thats a lot judged. We had one, which was its own problem. Only one point of view isn’t great if you ask me.

Thank you for this visual feast of quilts and turning leaves.
Congratulations on your blue and red ribbons. Your quilts are exquisite and I am awed by the meticulous piecing in both of them. Your X quilt must surely be the most original record of the year of the pandemic

Thank you, Mariss, for your kind and supportive comments!

So much fun to be able to see the show through your eyes, and that raffle quilt – oh my! They did just a beautiful job on it. Lucky winner. Congrats on your ribbons, despite the judging inconsistencies.

      Thank you Marie!

Congratulations on your ribbons. Spirit of Japan #6 is so lovely and elegant. Will check out the close ups. 2020 Canceled says it all! The nature photos are so colorful. Our leaves are slowly turning in Lexington. Thanks for sharing. Kelley

Thank you so much, Kelley! Happy to share!

Congratulations on your ribbons. I am looking forward to your comments on judging, as I would have said that your “Cancelled” quilt was a blue ribbon winner for sure. And, I know you do not enter shows just for ribbons and that you harbor no “sour grapes”. , so I am interested in hearing your comments. Anna Bullard’s quilt is stunning. I do not know her but she sent me a block for the “Community Supper” quilt. I fact, hers was the first I received. Your raffle quilt is simply amazing. What a lot of work for a raffle quilt! And, as always, I truly enjoy your nature photos. Hope to see you on Friday. I will text you later today.
