March 31, 2022: Monthly Mini

Greetings dear readers! Alas, because we were away half the month, and because of other demands, I couldn’t find time to make a new mini for March so I’m sharing an older piece. Of course, like all of you, I have been thinking about Ukraine and the war, which is heartbreaking. I’ve seen Ukraine’s ”blue and gold” colors shown everywhere in support – even this building in Alexandria, VA on our vacation:

So I looked through my collection of doll quilts and found this one in blue and cheddar to share:

I made it in 2016 and used quite a few different blue and gold fabrics in it. It’s 15 X 18 inches.

I like how I alternated light and dark blues and am happy with the yellow centers:

You can see the hand quilting on the back:

It is heart wrenching to see and think about all the destruction and loss and the refugees fleeing and seeking safety. That this war is happening is painful and infuriating! Jinny Beyer has quilting friends in Ukraine and recently had 2 posts on her blog – jinnybeyer.com – with comments from them and photos of quilts they’ve made (go see and read!!). Here’s one by her friend Lena:

Amazing! Let’s all donate what we can to help and hope for an end to this madness soon!

Go to Wendy’s blog, The Constant Quilter (link on the right side) to see all the minis for this month.

Be kind, be grateful, and cherish each day, Gladi

Gladi, what size are the ‘logs’ in your doll quilt? It is charming!

Thank you! The strips finish 3/8 inch. The blocks were FPP’d so not difficult.

Your log cabin doll quilt is just gorgeous. The war is horrible. Every morning when I check the news my heart just sinks.

Thank you Cynthia! I’m praying the war ends soon. Such unnecessary suffering!!

A beautiful mini log cabin. I like how you alternated the blues, lighter/ darker and the same with the gold side. Nice idea.

      Thanks so much Kyle!

Lovely little quilt! The yellow center squares remind me of the warmth and safety of home. Praying for the millions of Ukrainians who fled their homes to find safety in other countries.

Thanks Kelley. You’re right about those yellow center squares!

This was the perfect mini to share with us at this time. It is beautiful. The effect of the different values of blues is very striking. The border treatment is very unique and really seems to be appropriate for the log cabin. To me it almost seemed like a log fence around the cabin. 🙂
The Ukrainian quilter did a fantastic job!

Thanks so much Janet! I like what you said about the “log fence.”🙂. Make sure you check out Jinny’s blog for more Ukrainian quilts.

What a perfect mini for our times! I have no rules that say it has to be made in the month you post it. In fact, I have no rules at all! I love this mini. And, I thank you for the info about Jinny Beyer. I have sent blocks and I try to donate $$ every few weeks as funds allow. It is a tragic situation.

Thank you Wendy! I really appreciate you reminding me that the mini doesn’t always have to be brand new. My goal is to always have a new one, but that’s not always going to be practical. Thanks again to you for coordinating everything!👏🏻
