January 30,2021: “Monthly Mini” – “Hoping For Spring”

Greetings dear readers! For the past 2 years I have watched from the sidelines as several bloggers joined Wendy Reed at “The Constant Quilter” blog in making “monthly minis.” It’s been fun to see all the wonderful little quilts, but I hesitated to commit myself to it because I felt the added commitment would be too stressful. After wavering back and forth for the first 2 1/2 weeks of January I finally decided to throw caution to the wind and join this year! (Even though I still have so much to do with current projects! 🙂 )

Because I had already lost a chunk of time, I knew my first mini needed to be quick and easy. I remembered I had this little container of 3 1/2 inch squares:

I’d been using these to make these half square triangles blocks for the HST Medallion quilt and these were extra pieces I didn’t need.

I decided to use a buttery yellow background, instead of the white prints, with the already cut colored squares:

I paired blue/yellow with pink/yellow and green/yellow with red yellow to make pinwheel blocks:

I chose a pretty blue Dutch fabric for the border and added a red print inner border and binding and, voila!:

A couple of closeups:

I machine quilted it – not my forte, but I’m quite pleased with how it came out. Here’s the back:

I’m calling it “Hoping For Spring.” The colors make me think of spring – yellow sunshine, blue skies, and pink and red flowers with green stems and leaves. And I’m hoping to avoid Covid and get to spring still healthy! If my scheduled vaccine appointment isn’t changed, my second shot should just be reaching peak effectiveness the day spring begins!!

Go to Wendy’s blog, theconstantquilter.blogspot.com to see the list and links to other bloggers making monthly minis. The creativity always amazes me!

Be kind, be grateful, and cherish each day, Gladi

Thanks, Laurie. I love that blue fabric and this was a great way to feature some of it.

Gladi, I am unable to leave a comment on Wendy’s blog; could you pass this on, please? Love your mini! Hi, Wendy! Did you forget to add the picture of Bright Hopes? I’m sure others are interested to see it as well. Thanks, Sharon

Thank you! I’ll give contacting Wendy a try. I noticed the same thing.

Gladi this is just a luscious pretty mini, it’s just lovely. Hoping is great and it’s good news that you can get the second shot soon. In Japan they haven’t even started and I read that they won’t start distribution until April. Sigh.

Thank you so much Cynthia! Hope you can get the vaccine ASAP. I’m hoping we don’t get a snowstorm on our designated date!

Oh my! It is so funny how we were both thinking of the same pattern and the same word – Hope! Sorry I was late linking this post in. Not sure what happened yesterday but the pictures didn’t post and all the updates I did on Saturday didn’t show up until today. Such is life in the technological world! I adore this mini! The border fabric is one of my favorite Dutch prints and that backing is simply gorgeous! Thanks so much for joining in. We do have fun even when technology fails us! Hope you are ready for the big snow tonight. I can’t wait. I have planned a long snow day tomorrow with plenty of hand work if we lose power!

Amazing how our minds were thinking alike!! Really enjoyed seeing your lovely “micro mini” :). Thanks for inspiring me. Enjoy your snow day!! I used to love them, but they are less exciting now that I’ve retired. I still, however, enjoy seeing the snow and plan lots of hand work too.

What a happy little creation. I am SO in love with it. The colors, the prints, the design–it all works together so well. Absolutely charming!

Thank you so much! I absolutely LOVE yours too! I followed your link to Barber’s blog to see how to make it and hope to do that – maybe this year. Thanks for the inspiration!
