Greetings dear readers! Here’s my September mini, ”Halloween Baskets.”
I had never made a basket quilt or a Halloween quilt so decided that this month’s mini was a good way to remedy both situations! I looked through some pattern sources and couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for so decided to draft my own:
I also wanted to foundation paper piece it so figured out how to make that happen. For pieces 4 and 5, I cut the rectangle and triangle oversize, pieced them together, and then matched the seam with where I marked it on the foundation paper and proceeded to trim as usual. It worked perfectly.
Here are some closeups:
I foundation paper pieced the spikey border (drafted my own pattern). The center is hand quilted, but you can’t see the quilting well. The border is machine quilted. The corners needed something so I added the hand appliqued circles.
I thought cheddar and black were good Halloween colors and I always love the chance to add red to anything!😊 The batting is the Hobbes black that I showed in my last post. I found a good black print in my stash for the back:
I had fun using a stripe for the hand appliqued basket handles:
I think I see a larger basket quilt in my future, but no idea when because now that I have finished my red and white quilt, I am re-dedicating myself to finishing the hand quilting of Golden Glow, my album quilt done as part of Barbara Brachman’s Hospital Sketches sew along. It’s long past time to get it done!!
”Halloween Baskets” measures 19.5 inches square. I’m really happy with how it came out!
Be sure to go to Wendy Reed’s blog, The Constant Quilter, to see all of the other September minis. Thank you Wendy!
Be kind, be grateful, and cherish each day, Gladi
Oh my! I love everything about this one! What a prefect seasonal mini. I particularly love that spikey border and the circles in the corners. I love how you fussy cut the centers. Thanks for another super mini. I love the change in weather and hope we all get to enjoy some wonderful Fall quilting this month. I am really looking forward to the Cocheco show. We should arrive around noon on Saturday so we will connect then. Can’t wait.
Thanks Wendy! I am really looking forward to seeing you at the show on Saturday, the 16th!
Oh wow! I just love your min…what a perfect quilt!!!
Thank you Julie!
i love the stripe handle as well….very pretty and perfectly ghoulish!
Thanks so much!
The miniature is complete in every way: saturated colors, adorable traditional basket forms with perfect “braided” handles, and oh those corners. Thanks for generously sharing both your motivation & techniques. Thanks to seeing your considerable efforts, Gladi, I appliquéd 6 inch stems on 32 pieced maple leaf blocks and now congratulate myself on how much improved the blocks appear.
Thanks Marie for your kind words! Wish I could see your maple leaves!
This one is beyond perfect! The glow of that cheddar with the black and red fabrics is glorious. I love that it is seasonal and Halloween without screaming Halloween.
Thanks so much Pat! I agree – I like that it isn’t too “in your face Halloween” 🙂
Wonderful mini for Fall, and you used a variety of techniques to really create perfection! I’ve only made one basket quilt and like you, I drafted the pattern (this was a quilt study with AQSG). There is just something special about basket quilts!
Thank you Cynthia. Because I like basket quilts, I can hardly believe it took me 27 years of quilting to make one!
I love everything about this quilt, the colors, the fabrics, design, and the spiky border! It’s a fabulous mini.
Thank you Kyle!!
Absolutely wonderful. Just love the basket handles!
Thanks Lynn. I just happened to have the perfect fabric in my stash, purchased long ago! Of course, this is one of the arguments for buying even without a plan! 🙂
You certainly should be happy with this intricate mini-quilt. It is beautiful
Thanks Mariss. One of the most satisfying things for me about my quilt making is having the ability to design my own pieces. I’m happy with this one!😊
Supremely seasonal and sensational sewing!
Thank you Paul! I’m grateful for this supremely satisfying avocation!
Hope you and the family are well and thriving and enjoying the season!🍁
I always find your quilts inspiring – LOVE the spikey border! Now I’ll be dreaming of ways to incorporate spikes into one of my quilts!
Than you Angie! The spikey borders are easy to do with FPP and are really dynamic! Definitely try!
Every thing about this little sweetie is just wonderful! Those splashes of red are the perfect complement to the black and cheddar (BTW – LOVE that cheddar print – is it something that still might be available?). The spiky borders are fantastic. Each and every part is incredible but combined — OH MY!!!
Thanks for your kind words! The cheddar print is not new and I doubt still available, but there are some wonderful cheddar fabrics available that are likely just as good.
What a fabulous little basket quilt you made! Love the cheddar. There’s just something about basket quilts that seem very appealing to me and so I’ve made many of them through the years! Just can’t resist making them or crushing on them.:)
Thanks Audrey! I’ve really enjoyed seeing many of your basket quilts on your blog over the years and they have inspired me! Thank you for sharing them and your creative processes!
Oh, Gladi, what a spectacular little quilt! I just drooled over the photos. When I was reading down through the comments deciding what I would say, I read Kyle’s comment and realized those were the very words in my head!
I will add, good job designing that border. I have made my own foundation paper designs for borders on minis sometimes, but never had a result that stunning and dramatic.
Also, this is one of my favorite color combos!
I have actually made several basket minis, but now I want to make another! 🙂
Thank you so much Janet! High praise from you! I’ve loved seeing your many wonderful minis over the years!
I love every little detail of this marvelous mini. The circles in corners, the dragon teeth, the striped handles. The coloration is just lovely too.
I’m so glad you’ve joined the mini group. So fun to see what you come up with.
Thank you so much Barb!
