November 19, 2021: It’s all Red and White!

Greetings dear readers! This month and this year are truly flying by! My sewing room has become a ”leaf making factory” as I choose fabrics for and make the 229 leaves for the 4th ”Stormy Weather” border. Lots of fabric scattered about!

Placing the leaves so I get a good color mix:

Turning the edges under in batches of a few at a time whenever I have a few free moments during the day:

Today I’m sharing photos of only red and white quilts! There are 11 from the Cocheco exhibit that celebrated my guild’s 40th anniversary and I’ll also show you two quilts from the Boston museum exhibit that fit this category.

Here are the photos of quilts from my guild, in no particular order and I know I didn’t get them all:

And my own:

Here is the entirely red wholecloth quilt from the museum exhibit:

Some of the amazing quilting:

And last, but not least, one of the 3 Gee’s Bend quilts in the exhibit:

I hope you find these quilts as inspiring as I do!

I’m not sure I will get another post in before the holiday as I have a busy few days ahead. If I don’t, here’s wishing all my USA readers a peaceful time with loved ones, full of gratitude on Thanksgiving.

Be kind, be grateful, and cherish each day, Gladi

I so look forward to your Blog entries. I check each morning while having my coffee if you have posted that day. I love the exhibits you share with us. It’s as if I actually got to go. I am obsessed with “Stormy Weather” and your progress. Your interpretation of Stars and Sprigs encouraged me to purchase the pattern. Having just completed Friends of Baltimore not sure I am ready to jump right into another major applique project but enjoy your posts and progress. Thank you for an exciting journey while having coffee.

Thank you so much Sissy for your kind comments! So glad you enjoy the blog. Wow – Friends of Baltimore is an incredible appliqué quilt and I can totally understand your wanting a break from another major appliqué project for a while 🙂. I have found Stars and Sprigs to be fun – if/when you’re ready.

Good morning! Thank you for sharing the red and white quilt exhibit. Each is so lovely and the red and white scoreboard in the background blended right in with the quilts! I especially like your crib quilt. The leaves truly come alive with the hand embroidery. I chuckled at the thought that your sewing room turned into a leaf factory prepping 229 leaves for your fourth border! Wishing you and your family and happy and blessed Thanksgiving! kelley

It was fun to go from your delicious layout of colors for your leaves, to the start and beautiful red and white quilts. I must say that your red and white is definitely my favorite. Thanks for sahing more of the MFA’ s quilts. The whole cloth is amazing. I love the name, “Increase” too. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Your guild’s red and white display is wonderful. (I like your white glove!) Thanks for sharing the MFA quilts, too.

Thanks Nann. I’m really glad you enjoyed the photos. I also like the idea of identifying quilts that are hand quilted with those “hand.” I was happy to see the number of those go up this year 😊.

The red and white quilts are so beautiful, yours included. I’m fascinated by the quilting on the Courthouse Steps. What an amazing quilt. Happy Thanksgiving! I know by the way you sign off your blog posts (and by themes in your writing) that you have a grateful heart every day of the year;).

    • gladiporsche November 20, 2021 / 9:15 pm

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well Cynthia! I believe that bitterness is corrosive and that it is critically important for all of us to recognize, feel, and demonstrate gratitude for our many blessings every day. So happy to be able to have some family with us this year!

Your leaf factory is in full swing and the colors are beautiful. What a wonderful display of red and white quilts. Each one is lovely including yours, of course. Love seeing the whole cloth red quilt and knowing it’s history.

    • gladiporsche November 20, 2021 / 9:18 pm

Thanks so much Kyle! Red and white quilts, when hung as a group, have such an impact! I almost didn’t make a quilt for the exhibit, but am now so happy I did! Have a lovely holiday!

Red and white quilts are a favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing so much inspiration!

I loved your post. The first pictures of all your fabrics neatly stacked together was very satisfying. Only someone who loves fabric could find contentment in just looking at pieces and that’s me. The red and white quilts were inspiring and led to the purchase of Edyta’s Blue and White book so I can make one of them. Thanks so much.

    • gladiporsche November 20, 2021 / 9:25 pm

It really made me smile to read your comment about the contentment of looking at bits and chunks of fabric – me too! It’s also nice to know whenever I share anything that’s inspiring so thanks for that feedback, Robin. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
